Protecting Yourself From Identity Theft

Phishing, the fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information such as passwords and credit card numbers, was recently reaffirmed as the "biggest cybersecurity threat in 2018." 

One way to protect against this threat is to resist responding to emails that request personal information.  If the request appears to come from a company where you have have an account, call the company directly and use the phone number from a recent statement to provide the requested information.  Note that phishing schemes can also originate as phone calls.  Especially during tax-time, please remember that the IRS does not reach out to taxpayers via telephone.  Click here for more ways to protect yourself from identity theft.
