FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do clients choose TWM?

Clients come to us because they feel they lack the time, temperament or expertise to manage all the components of their wealth. They choose us because they want to partner with a highly trained and experienced group of professionals who are accountable, who possess the highest standard of ethics, and who truly care about their clients’ financial future. We provide peace of mind, helping to ensure that our clients can achieve their life dreams and goals.

How long has Thompson Wealth Management been in business?

TWM was founded in 1991 as a firm that offers comprehensive wealth management, coordinating our clients’ financial universe to help them to achieve their life goals.

What does it mean to be a “fee-only” firm?

As a “fee-only” firm, the only income we receive is from our clients. We charge a maximum annual fee, which is generally 1% or less of the assets we manage. We receive no compensation from commissions, loads, bonuses or any other sources. Our recommendations are made solely with your best interest in mind.

What are your fees?

Our fee structure is fully transparent with no fine print. Our maximum annual fee is 1% or less of the assets we manage. Depending on the level of assets and service we provide, some clients pay a flat fee.

Who is a typical TWM client?

Our clients include corporate executives, entrepreneurs, families and individuals that are striving for financial independence or have attained a level of wealth. They want the peace of mind that they are in control to meet their financial needs over time.

Do you require a minimum level of assets to become a client?

We provide wealth management services to high net-worth individuals and families and associated entities, such as trusts and company retirement plans. Our clients include families, individuals, corporate executives and entrepreneurs that are striving for financial independence or have attained a level of wealth. They span different industries and lifestyles, and generally range from those with assets of $1,000,000 to more than $10,000,000. We recognize, however, that financial planning should not necessarily wait until you have made it "big." For those of you on the rise, please don't hesitate to call us. Be sure to request our latest SEC Form ADV which provides specific information about our fees and services.

Are you a fiduciary for your clients?

Yes, TWM is a fee-only, SEC registered investment adviser under the Investment Adviser Act of 1940 and, as such, we act as a fiduciary for our clients. That’s important because we are required to always put our clients’ personal interests before our own. It also means that we are willing to assume fiduciary responsibility for the decisions we make.

It can be confusing because other players in the business use titles such as “investment advisor” (usually spelled with “O” rather than an “E”), investment consultant, financial planner, etc. Professionals such as stockbrokers, financial planners, insurance agents and bank representatives operate under different regulatory standards called “suitability.” This means recommendations need to be suitable, but not necessarily in the client’s best interest, which opens the door to selling higher cost, proprietary products and services. At TWM we select from an unrestricted universe of investments based on what’s best for you. We are committed to a relationship of trust, confidence, and legal responsibility.

What is TWM’s approach to developing a client portfolio?

We take the time to truly get to know each and every one of our clients. Where you are now and where you want to be in the future are critical components of your personal investment policy statement. We work together to set risk and return expectations as we build your unique portfolio. We continually review that portfolio, making adjustments over time to reflect both personal and market changes. Every step we take is based in helping you achieve your life goals so you can truly enjoy the fruits of your labor.

What is your investment style?

TWM favors a long-term perspective that includes developing a globally diversified asset allocation in a tax-sensitive portfolio that is unique for each client. TWM does not try to trade the market but strives to position each client’s portfolio to achieve higher after tax returns through broad diversification.

What investments do you buy?

Our clients’ portfolios include stocks, bonds, real assets and cash using no-load mutual funds, exchanged traded funds and individual bonds. TWM conducts unbiased investment research and selects optimal assets for each client’s specific circumstances. We manage every portfolio individually with regular re-balancing and reviews in an effort to optimize investment performance and minimize expenses and taxes.

Where is my money held?

All client accounts are held at an outside custodian, typically Fidelity Investments. This affords each client the security of knowing they have a “Third Party” custodian for their money as all accounts are held in the clients’ names with complete transparency and direct access through the custodian. Accounts at other custodians may be aggregated electronically into our portfolio management system.
