Upon reaching age 18, an individual is considered to be an adult in most states and is entitled to medical privacy that prevents doctors from sharing any information without permission.
This includes sharing information about a medical condition with this individual’s parents. However, with a couple of documents, including a health-care proxy and a power of attorney, parents can get information about their child’s medical condition, access records and make decisions for them if they are incapacitated. The attached article provides more information about this recommended plan of action.
Grandparents, please pass this along to your children.
